ABOUT

People of Color Worship & Reflection Group (“POC”) is a worship group conducted in the manner of the Religious Society of Friends and is under the care of Manhattan Monthly Meeting. POC is committed to the “open, expectant religion” envisioned by the original founders of Quakerism with an emphasis on exploring the rich spiritual heritage and traditions of People of Color in America.

Join us for worship and reflection every Second Sunday of the month at 10:00 AM at the Old Quaker Meeting House, located at 137-16 Northern Boulevard, Flushing, New York 11354. First Day School (Quaker instruction for children) and adult study is available.

“There is a principle, which is pure, placed in the human mind, which in different places and ages hath had different names. It is, however, pure and proceeds from God. It is deep and inward, confined to no forms of religion nor excluded from any, where the heart stands in perfect sincerity. In whomsoever this takes root and grows, of what nation soever, they become brethren.”

John Woolman, 1776

LGBTQIA+ Minute: Our experience has been that spiritual gifts are not distributed with regard to sexual orientation or gender identity. Our spiritual work is dependent on recognizing all people, including those who identify as LGBTQIA+. We are all equal and beloved, as God made us, and the gifts of the Spirit are ours to joyously share. We celebrate, worship, wed, work, mourn, and rejoice together in all the “diverse liveries we wear.”

POC Quakers dan la bienvenidos a los desconocideos. No preguntamos sobre tu estatus migratorio. Si necesitas apoyo o recursos, intentaremos conectarte con ellos.

Reproductive Rights Minute: As Quakers, our faith respects both individual personhood and the covenant relationship of families. We are exhorted to be faithful to the Spirit based on a trust in, and love of each other. POC does not promote any specific doctrine, rules or regulations regarding these matters, nor do we recommend any. We have made no determination as to when the Light is first kindled in a human being. POC never asks a Seeker or Member what procedures or choices they have made regarding their reproductive health, nor do we inquire what procedures regarding reproductive choice a Seeker or Member may have performed on others. Rather we trust each person to make these decisions for themselves. We look to our faith to give us guidance in self-discipline, but this discipline emphasizes a seeking of the Spirit manifesting God’s purpose in the world, as each of us is best able to discern its expression in our own lives.

Quakers believe in the sacred worth of each person and stand against violence in all its forms.
As Quaker organizations, we mourn all lives lost and lament with everyone who is
suffering. We grieve for those in Israel and Palestine who have lost precious lives. We pray
with those waiting for the return of loved ones and those living under siege and
bombardment.
The Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 killed over 1,300 Israelis, and civilian hostages were
taken by Hamas into Gaza. As of October 16, the subsequent Israeli military attack on Gaza
had killed at least 2,950 Palestinians, including over 1,030 children. It had displaced more
than one million Palestinians in Gaza, with over 7,500 homes destroyed. Today, on October
17, we are deeply saddened at additional losses, especially the bombing of the Al-Ahli
Hospital, with reports of at least 500 casualties. These numbers will continue to rise if attacks
do not end.
